CEO of Mirror Trading International, Cornelius Johannes Steynberg, has been ordered to pay a whopping $3.4 billion for a fraudulent scheme involving Bitcoin and foreign currency transactions.
Steynberg accepted over 29,000 BTC, valued at more than $1.7 billion, from 23,000 individuals globally from May 2018 to March 2021, and misappropriated all of the Bitcoin from pool participants.
The penalty includes $1.73 billion in restitution to defrauded victims and an additional $1.73 billion civil monetary penalty, making it the highest ever in a CFTC case.
Steynberg is banned from violating the Commodity Exchange Act and trading in any CFTC-regulated markets.

The FBI executed a search warrant at the residence of Ryan Salame, a former top executive at FTX in Maryland on Thursday morning.
